Dear Santa

Dear Santa,

My mother told me last night that you weren't real... I cried. Although I believe you are real, my mother always tries to convince me you aren't. This year for christmas I would like a new bike, the one I have at the moment has unicorns and ponies on it, I think I'm a bit too old for that now. I believe I have been a good boy this year and really deserve something decent. That reminds me I want a swimming pool for our family to enjoy, not one of those budget ones though. If you're going to consider getting me a small one just forget it...

This year I will be leaving out beer because I am not totally convinced you liked the milk and cookies from last year. My mother suggested that I should also ask you what type of biscuits you want or if you'd prefer pizza. We can adjust to anything you need.

I know that what I ask for is a big task at this time of the year so it will be fine if I get only half of my wish. Please send my regards to the elves that engineered and produced the products I asked for. Thank you once again for taking time out of your day to read this letter.

Yours Sincerely,
Flynn Wheeler

Third World Countries

Third world countries are countries that suffer extreme poverty and are fighting for survival. Some third world countries include Malawi, Madagascar & Afghanistan. An average citizen of Malawi spends $1.60 per day. They receive just under $1000 dollars a year if they are lucky. The term Third World is commonly used to describe developing countries of Asia & Africa etc. New Zealand is a first world country as it says on the map, as we are quite a developed country. Even though 1/6 of people in New Zealand are living in poverty. Malawi is classified as a Third World country because the majority of land there is drylands and forests. People are forced to survive by hunting and scavenging.

45 Minute Inquiry - A Rose By Any Other Name - #3

….A Rose By Any Other Name….
A Rose By Any Other Name Would Smell So Sweet. This is a commonly used quote from the play Romeo and Juliet. This play was written and directed by William Shakespeare. This piece was created between the years of 1591-1595. The meaning of the quote is, what matters is what something is, not what it is called.

The line was in spoken in Scene two in the play by Juliet. Romeo was having an argument with Juliet at the time the line was recited.

William Shakespeare was born in the United Kingdom in Stratford. He passed away at the age of 52.

45 Minute Inquiry - Logging - #2

This logging industry is situated at 10 Rata Street near SH2. The company processing and transporting logs here profit $5.6 million dollars each year. The Tauranga Port has spent $34 million on logging throughout the life of the port. Trains, boats & trucks transport logs around the world all of the time. One of the port's major cargos are forestry.

The trees at this logging port are imported from Asia. Once they are processed the majority are sent back to Asia and a small amount are sent to Kawerau Wood Mill. At Kawerau Wood Mill they process the wood into wood chips and then in to newspaper. A company called  C3 is one of the main processors of the wood sent here from Asia. They process 300,000 wood chips every week.

The wood is used for building materials, fencing & maintenance. All of the trees at the Tauranga Port are pine trees.

45 Minute Inquiry - Curling - #1

Curling is an international game that is held in the Winter Olympics. The first international event of curling was held in the 1924 olympic games. Curling is mainly played on ice. Curling could otherwise be known as chess on ice. A curling team consists of 4 people.

It can be played by both genders and any ages can compete. The aim of the game is to roll the curling stone onto the target. One game consists of ten rolls, from there all of your points would be tallied up for your grand total. The two or more teams playing would then compare scores. The team with the higher score wins.

One person rolls the curling stone down the center of the lane. Two people from the team of four sweep the ice in front of the curling stone in order for it to travel farther. If they want it to slow down they will make the ice rougher by scratching it. The other person will either score or be the substitute.

Whilst curling people wear curling gloves/mittens and specialized shoes with smooth soles to allow grip on the ice. The equipment needed are curling stones, stopwatches, curling gloves & brooms.

Game Review: Despicable Me - Minion Rush

Despicable Me - Minion Rush is a game that is available on the Android Market and the App Store. It is a free game available for anyone with a touch screen device. It is a game that is basically like the worldwide phenomenon Temple Rush.

In the game you can upgrade pick ups, your character and buy new characters. During the game you travel through various scenes including Gru's Lab, The Neibourhood, The Beach & The Evil Lair. Whilst playing the game you collect bananas which is basically the despicable currency. You can also collect pickups which give super abilities.

This game was made by Gameloft Studios and was released in November 2013.
I would recommend this game for younger children, around the age of 5-8, because along the way you experience funny moments, videos & pictures. It is an all round enjoyable game.

After that we were taken to the GYYT (Graeme Young Youth Center.) We found out that we were in the Accelerant System. After that we were shown around the rest of the school. We met back in the Gym for our final briefing and all of the extra information about the school.

Describing Dystopian Picture

A row of red lights descending in the distance. Cars lined up like an army of red ants in battle formation. Murky smoke rising from the many factories on the hill.
I clenched my wheel in anger, "Get out of the way!" All that was in my head was frustration. The seat beneath me started to reach great temperatures.

Dialogue..

1.
"I can't see what it says on the map," Albert said, "I forgot my glasses."
Hilda replied, "What? I can't hear you!"
"If we go down this street we will reach the dentist and he will check your dentures" Albert stated.
"Speak up!" Hilda screamed.
"Don't argue sweetie, it will be alright." Albert said
2.
"Mum, I've been wondering if I could get a raise" Jonny said.
"A raise in fitness, a raise in stamina... A raise in your pokemon's experience level?" Mum said sarcastically.
"No Mum, a raise in pocket money." Jonny shouted.
"Don't use that tone with me young man, I won't put up with this! Go to your room!" Mum screamed.

12 Hour Relay Poem

12 Hour Relay, Can't Get Enough!
2013, It was so tough.
The weather was nice, warm and sunny.
We still just kept on running and running.
At the end of the night we were all really puffed.
But with the amount of laps I did I was really chuffed.

The 12 Hour Relay Disaster

There was a massive crack and a reverberating boom... Everyone glanced around, all of the athletes were lying on the ground. From in the shadows came a black bulletproof hummer. It was going at least 150km per hours. The crowd started to scream. Everyone instantly ran for cover. The Kahikatea toilets were crowded with over 100 people. Mr Diver instantly dialed 111, but to his amazement the police force did not reply to his call. A man in dark glasses emerged from the black vehicle and was now standing in the middle of the field. He glared at us through the window..

Dear Mr Diver..

Dear Mr Diver,

One change that I think would be necessary is larger technology suites. Whenever we go to technology it feels just a tiny bit cramped. More machines and larger rooms could also improve the quality of the products being made and the overall outcome.

12 Hour Relay Poem

1 person from each team runs at a time.
2 teams per house.

Hardcore competition between all of the houses.
Our house never wins.
Underneath the blazing sun.
Racing against over 900 people.

Running for 12 hours.
Even the people that don't compete have to run.
Lollies sold in stands all over the field.
Anybody that looks sees everyone's bloodshot eyes at the end of the day.
Yelling teachers pushing on their students.

Just Say No..

I’ve got some older friends (I’m 13, they are 14/15) who have invited me to a party on Saturday night at someone’s house. I’m pretty sure everyone there will be drinking . I’ve never had alcohol before. I’m going to tell my parents that I’m staying the night at my friend’s. I feel quite nervous, cos I know it’s bad. What should I do?

Tell your parents that you are drinking at this party and that you are the youngest there. You have to stand up for yourself whilst at parties like these, you have to come prepared. Before heading to a party with people this age think everything through. Think of the possibilities...

Give Advice..

I found out my two friends smoke. Im only 13. I don't know what to do. I am really confused, Please Help.
Give Advice..

Don't copy what they are doing, it is completely inappropriate at this age. You should tell their parents and ask if they know what their child is doing. Don't let them hook you into what they're doing. You must stay strong and not let them push you around. Just think of the consequences that are still to come.     There are more important things at your age then smoking...

One formal occasion that I have been to is my step sister's wedding. We had to help out with setting up all of the venues and decorations. We went to the top of a hill for the ceremony then went back to the Whakatane Golf Club for the feast. My mum had to buy me a suit so I could be the second best man. There were several old cars that we got to go in, there was also a limousine!

Movie Review - Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters

Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters is an action/horror/fantasy movie that has been recently released. This movie was directed by Tommy Wirkola and starred Jeremy Renn & Gemma Arterton. So far there is no sequel as it is a new release. The movie had a budget of $50,000,000! It has earned $225,703,405 on box office so far.
Hansel and Gretel are left in the woods to survive by themselves on a misty winter evening. They are about to starve to death when they come across  a candy cottage, little do they know that there is a witch hiding inside. At this time they didn't know the powers behind the candy on the house. The candy made them immune to witch's magic...
This movie would be suited for ages 13 and over, it has a high amount of violence and some swearing.

A savant is someone with autism. People with autism are generally specially talented at one thing only, their are only 50 people known as savants alive, their brains function differently to most people. We watched a video about George Finn, he was able to recall what the days were if someone gave him a date, for example you could say 31st August 1643 and he would name what day of the week it was. We watched another video of Daniel Tamment, he memorized the first 22,000 numbers of Pi. He traveled to Oxford University to recite the numbers to several people who were following on the sheet. He was going for the world record and he achieved.

On Thursday at football practice I got tackled and landed on my shoulder, I couldn't move it and was unable to move. We had to call the ambulance, the man said that it would take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour for it to arrive. Once the ambulance arrived they made me inhale some happy gas, I fell to sleep for 10 seconds, then I woke up, the pain was mostly gone but came back in 20 seconds. This gave the paramedics enough time to get me back on my feet. We went to the hospital and they did an x-ray on my shoulder and gave me some medicine. My lowlight was having to have some sticks shoved up my nose with medecine in them.

For & Against 2

Football is the best sport..

For:
•You do not gain as much injuries as other sports, it is a lower contact sport.
•You don't have to put up with lots of fights.
•You get more glory if you score than you would in other sports such as rugby.
•The games are generally earlier, you still have opportunities to carry out other tasks on that day.
Against:
•Most coaches generally substitute players every 5-15 minutes, so that everyone gets a fair chance to play.

Monday, 5 August 2013

For & Against

Computer Gaming Is Good For You?

For?
•It is enjoyable and keeps you occupied when you are bored.
•Some games can enhance your real life ability by giving you tips or showing you what to do.

Against?
•You will slowly gain weight and your social life will start to disappear.
•Gaming can become an addiction, you have to balance it out with other tasks in your life.

A 12 x 12 gird is a maths grid. You can draw the grid or find a website and print them out online. You simply start off with 1x1 then you can go from there… Maybe 1x2 then 1x3. You stay in one row either vertical or horizontal, and go down or across crossing over the rest of the rows. After that you simply keep repeating the pattern. In the term 1 of 2013 before maths we had to complete a 12x12 grid in under 5 minutes and we had to keep on going and we get a tick by our name if we manage to beat our time or some days even finish before 5 minutes if you usually aren't able to do that. My best time at school was around 3.45m, my worst time was around 4.35m. Now this is one of our homework challenges. So, each night I practiced one or more grids. I knew that this was going to be one of the hardest challenges. I got down to 3.10m and I was not making any progress for a few weeks. I usually say the numbers, my mum suggested that me saying the numbers slowed me down. I tried without saying the numbers and I managed to get my best time yet and a completed homework challenge. My time was 2.57.03!

Homework Challenge P6

Walk, run or cycle around the the Waikareao Estuary four times with a family member.

For this homework challenge I have walked and cycled around the Waikareao Estuary four times. On Monday 1st of July my mum and I walked the estuary to get to know the track that we were going to be doing 3 more times. It took us 2 hours to walk the track. On Saturday 6th of July I cycled the estuary twice with my dad. Each lap took us approximately 30 minutes. On the second lap I recorded a video of the track. The recording was just me holding my iPod out in front of me whilst I was riding. One week after we walked the track, I rode it with my mum. It took us 35 minutes to complete one full lap.
Here are some photos of me completing my homework challenge…

Homework Challenge P3

Explore the outdoors: With a family member or family friend complete an 8 hour tramp or an overnight camp out

On the 6th of July I completed the homework challenge "explore the outdoors." In the afternoon my Mum and I walked down to the back of our property where it is a bit swampy. We took a tent and set it up at around 4:00pm. After that we walked back home and got dressed and collected all our gear. We made some dinner to take down and packed a few marshmallows to roast as well. At 5:30 we grabbed our torches and walked down the track to the swamp. Once we arrived we set up our beds and put the food under cover. Then we started the fire, we had to use an old 44 galon drum lid to start the fire on because of safety precautions. We unfolded our armchairs and relaxed. I suggested a marshmallow roasting competition… Of course I won the competition! About 3 hours later we hopped in to the tent and slowly drifted to sleep…I woke up 3 times during the night, 1am, 4am and 5am. Finally I woke up for my day at 7am. At 8am we started the fire and roasted the left over marshmallows, we even tried roasting some bananas, but that didn't really work. We packed up most of our things and started heading back up the hill. That was the end of our awesome overnight camp out…
